The Computer Engineering undergraduate program is accredited by the Engineering Accreditation Commission of ABET, http://www.abet.org/.

The Lehigh Computer Engineering undergraduate program has been accredited since 1987.

Mission Statement for the Computer Engineering Program

The mission of the Computer Engineering program is to prepare computer engineers to meet the challenges of the future; to promote a sense of scholarship, leadership and service among our graduates; to instill in the students the desire to create, develop, and disseminate new knowledge; and to provide international leadership to the computer engineering profession.

Program Educational Objectives

The objective of the Computer Engineering Program is to produce students who within 5-10 years after graduation will:

• Meet expectations of the employers of computer engineers.

• Pursue diverse career paths if they so desire.

• Become leaders in their chosen careers.

Student Outcomes for Computer Engineering 

At the time of their graduation, our students will have: 

  • An understanding of the fundamentals of science, mathematics and engineering and the ability to apply this knowledge to solve computer engineering problems; 
  • The ability to design and conduct experiments to further their understanding of circuits and software systems and to analyze and interpret graphical, numerical and/or textual data and apply this data to solve computer engineering problems;
  • The ability to design a digital/embedded system and the associated software to meet a set of specifications which has realistic constraints such as patentability, economic, environmental, social, political, ethical, health and safety, manufacturability, and sustainability;
  • The ability to effectively contribute and work on a multi-disciplinary team;

Our interpretation of multi-disciplinary teams includes teams of individuals with similar educational backgrounds focusing on different aspects of an experiment or project as well as teams of individuals with different educational backgrounds. This includes majors both inside the Engineering College as well majors in the College of Arts and Sciences, and further includes both Computer Engineering and Electrical Engineering majors

  • The ability to identify, mathematically model, and solve computer enginering problems;  
  • The ability to understand professional and ethical responsibilities in engineering;  
  • The ability to effectively communicate using oral, written and visual means;  
  • An understanding of the impact of engineering solutions in a global, economic, environmental and societal context;
  • A recognition of the need for, and the ability to, engage in life-long learning; 

Our interpretation of this outcome is that it includes teaching students that a strong foundation in fundamentals such as mathematics and the physical sciences is important because technology will change, and a strong understanding of these fundamentals will help them to understand and comprehend new technologies. We also identify for students the mechanisms that they can use for continued learning such as professional societies, attending seminars, graduate school, etc. 

  • Knowledge of contemporary issues; 

Our interpretation of this outcome includes making students aware of emerging technologies, the impact of globalization, consideration of both domestic and foreign governmental regulations on the design process , as well as the material that is presented in humanities and social sciences courses. 

  • The ability to use current engineering and software tools, skills and techniques for the practice of computer engineering.  

The Computer Engineering curriculum and the steps taken to effectively implement this curriculum are the main vehicles to ensure that program outcome criteria, and ultimately program educational objectives, are met.
